I remember on a date trying to get the romance thing down as a young man of 18.
I took out a sweet young girl much like the person I married. I made what I believed back then a STUPID remark, which I did out of jest.
This girl was of a very delegate nature so I said it to shock her.
I said to her “You are what you eat”, when we were in the restaurant and eating hamburgers and fries.
To my amazement that day as a High School senior, she considered me a scholar. Now that I am a doctor, well, I guess she was right.
Somehow, it took me years of even having cancer in remission to learn this valuable lesson and that I needed to own this decision.
What I have learned from that experience is that owning our own lives, is making decisions that improve our way of life including our health.
Science today is not only interested in the benefits of Micro Meditation on mindfulness, but also into what bacteria lives in your gut. Yes, science is finding out, that it is your choice of diet that offers your own good or bad health. Because science has discovered this truth, “You are What You Eat”.
The problem is that the everyday war we experience whether political or even in life begins with what we eat for today. And it tends to be a war of our own making. Ignorance still tends to be a human problem that we take on how we were taught how and what to eat by unknowing parents.
I only relate that hamburger and fries High School experiences because what I thought was humorous pronouncement, is what I learned today is rather profound. In fact, it is something that a many American’s have seldom considered. Otherwise Fast Food business would be serving a different menu.
If we go back to Europe during the Feudal system, our diet back then was predominantly plant based until around the Industrial Revolution, where cattle and sheep and herding became once again became our predominant source of nutrition. Today, we have moved into pesticides and preservatives.
Somehow, diet is more important than one could ever imagine, going along with exercise. However, it seems as if our cultural norms tend to gravitate on gradual erosion from good to worse over time.
You have heard the expression: Garbage In / Garbage Out. What is interesting this also has to do with what we eat as much as a statement about our technology?
For example, now we add so many preservatives and also chemicals into our foods. We moved from a plant based diet into even worse, into a manufactured diet. Each regression keeps getting us in the hole in the area of nutritional benefits, over time.
The real question that people need to ask with all the junk food, Fast Food, and our manufactured diets, is, “What is going on in our gut?” Why has our diets since the beginning of Mc Donald's’ Los Angeles in the 1950’s and it having progressively gone from better to worse?
Just see what I ate when I was a teenager to see that what I thought was good for me back then, is no longer the diet that science has discovered. So why have our diets today descended all to the way down to the eternal abyss.
Case in point, once the tobacco companies saw legislation aimed at reducing its market share, through anti-smoking and anti-second hand smoking, they raced with their cash to purchase major shares in Nabisco and General Foods.
If you couldn’t trust them with your kids and Camel Joe, how can you trust them now that they have entered into the food processing business? What does that suggest about our children’s future nutrition?
So recently, science has not only entered the area of mindfulness, but is also entering the area of diet. The question of being a machine or an organism not only is crossing mind studies but also studies on what people eat, and what type of bacteria or micro-organisms when one eats congregates in your stomach.
If we believe as the mind sometimes thinks the body is a machine, then we are willing to eat anything, which we believe tastes good, even that which is not good for us. However, science is beginning to see the human, like any animal, as an organism and what we eat, creates the bacteria and micro-organisms that can either be harmful or beneficial. The more crap we eat, the worse off is the bacteria in our GUT.
So now we have to ask the question what is in your diet? Do you eat, a more plant based diet? Or do you eat a more animal based diet? Or you eat a more manufactured pesticide, and chemical based diet offered to us to your by ex-tobacco executives. Yes those companies that marketed cigarettes by Camel Joe, to children. Today it is sugar and red die based cereals. Even the Oriel cookie, might be filled with waste.
Another question we have to ask is, “If you and I were to eat a better diet, would many of the diseases most of us receive, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes disappear? If that were the case, I am certain that the pharmaceutical business could go out of business and you would see fewer boring or embarrassing TV ads.
My pronouncement is this, it is not only mindfulness, that is a choice, but also what you eat. If you could change your diet from a meat or manufactured based to about 90% plant based diet how would your life change? After in remission from cancer, today I purposely eat less meat and mostly a plant based diet.
After having Chemo treatment about 3 months ago, and switching to a more plant based diet, and if I eat meat 3 or 3 times a week it is usually fish or chicken for protein. But after 3 months after Chemo, and having stage 4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I bounced back in 3 months from my doctor’s surprise.
My belief is that now that I added a more plant based diet, I have allowed more plant based organism to populate my stomach, and that these organisms are less toxic, and placed my cancer in short order in remission. I also added a special supplement that I take to that is said to attack cancer and also plaque and reduces inflammation. The supplement is called MMF and I will share it with you later.
So remember when you go to the grocers this week. Do yourself a favor, and walk by all the center aisles filled with meats and that other manufactured crap from Kraft, Nabisco and General Foods, or Pepsi (Lays), that is temptingly available and bolt directly to the fruit and vegetable aisles. Next run to the cashier and make payment and exit undeterred.
